Tattoo Flash – Skull
If we look at the fashions and contemporary art of the past one hundred years, the skull is one of the most omnipresent symbols. Punks started using it in the 1970s and it was later adopted by Goths. In the hard rock scene skulls are synonymous with strength and indifference towards death.

In 2007 British artist Damien Hirst produced a platinum cast of a real human skull, encrusted with 8,601 diamonds and called it ‘’For the Love of God’’, making the skull a genuine cult object in contemporary art.
The skull has also become a style icon on the world’s catwalks: after the designer Alexander McQueen made it his signature motif other fashion houses began to use the image in their collections too.
As is often the case, the tattoo world is a step or two ahead of fashion – in fact the skull has long been a classic tattoo symbol. It is one of the most popular and constantly reinvented subjects, reproduced in a variety of styles and interpretations. The latest trend, for example, is for Mexican style skulls!
